Acne vulgaris, also known simply as acne, is a common, chronic, inflammatory disease of the glands that produce sebum (sebaceous follicles). This disease results in the formation of inflamed elevations (papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), and scars on the skin.

Acne is one of the most common disorders treated by dermatologists and other healthcare providers. More than 90 percent of world population is affected by acne at some point in their life. Although acne is a skin disease, it can lead to prominent emotional and psychological issues.

Several studies have confirmed that acne can affect a person’s quality of life, self-esteem, and mood in an adverse manner. Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition with a multifactorial pathogenesis. The source is hormonal changes during puberty and it is then further exacerbated by genetic and other factors.

How does the laser treatment work?

Light emitted directly targets the overactive sebaceous glands, greatly reducing the total number and severity of active lesions. This lessens inflammation and frequency of breakouts. The light stimulates the production of new collagen to improve skin texture, scarring and can also reduce the appearance of red or brown areas of skin that are often associated with acne breakouts.

What does the treatment feel like?

Treatment is mildly uncomfortable but there is no need for anaesthesia and the procedure is actually quite quick. Sensations vary but most people describe the treatment as feeling like a very quick, hot pinprick.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies from client to client and is dependent on many factors. Though results can been seen after a few treatments, a minimum of 4 and up to 8 treatments, at 4-week intervals, deliver the best results.

Who is suitable for the treatment?

Almost everyone can be treated, apart from tanned individuals. If you are pregnant or taking Roaccutane (an acne medication) it is best not to undergo treatment until
you have been off the medication for a minimum of 6 months.
